Feedback comments for “Our Little Sister”.
As ever, we are always interested to receive any additional comments people may have on this film.
This was kind of film which, in theory, could have lasted… For ever! It simply and effectively engaged with a group of characters, each one simply attractive and fascinating. Who needed a ‘plot’, but the occasional funeral or health and economic crisis helped things along. It had to end, if for no other reason that the Cramphorn seats will, only stand 2 hours max!
Yes, I agree with Peter here. Partly due to the episodic nature of the original source material (the ‘Umimachi Diary’ comic strip in the monthly “Flowers” magazine), there was no real plot, just a series of events in the lives of the four sisters. Nonetheless, with the very naturalistic performances and beautiful scenery, I never felt the film dragged.
Perhaps I would have liked more emotional depth (the film only briefly touched on Suzu’s inability to talk about their father to her half-sisters, nor the pain of being his main carer in his final days) – but then again, this is probably more a European view and not in keeping with Japanese Cinema
