Ken Loach’s documentary is a nostalgic homage to the birth of the welfare state, the Beveridge spirit and the post-war Labour government as it sought to address the relationship between capitalism and poverty, bringing in a programme of nationalisation, with the subsequent media vilification of union workers. Some have said it was an attempt to reform capitalism rather than bring in socialism. Focusing on reminiscence, the film packs an emotional punch, a salutary theme for our age of austerity.
