Reaction to “Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry’

Apologies for not bringing along the reaction slips for the last film. The comments made by several people as they were leaving the theatre were on the positive side, with several commending the lead actress’s performance and a few saying that they didn’t see the ending coming.

For my part, this is the second time I’ve seen this film, and I recall deciding part way through the film that Etero would end up pregnant; the decision by Murman and her, at the outset, that no one must ever know of their relationship, against the women in the village’s constant digs about her never marrying and not having anyone to look after her in later life, seemed to suggest such an outcome.

Overall, I thought this was a wonderful film. There was a deep sympathy with the character of Etero, even though she was often cold and hostile towards the older members of her community.

  1. I thought this was an excellent film, though I naively didn’t foresee the final outcome.

Etero’s silent nature, worked very well for a sub-titled film, allowing the camera to tell the story much of the time and a magnificent, understated performance by Eka Chavleishvili.

It was a window into what one imagines rural life in many Eastern European countries to be like or, for that matter, rural communities throughout the world. Beautiful countryside too and it made our rain seem like drizzle….

    A great choice of film.
