    • How many shades of grey in Iceland? So few words, so many images – total cinema. A journey through existence, veering between the profound and the mundane.
    • Superb – real Film Club film – without the dog though…? Still great!!
  • ‘Very Good’: 13 votes
    • For a long time, I wasn’t sure where the film was heading (except, ultimately, Eyrarbakki), but the dénouement was worth the wait. Excellent soundtrack.
    • Brilliant score. I also loved the juxtaposition of the white Ford Cortina. Good laugh.
    • I loved the attention to detail. A great sense of period. Lots of references to “Blow Up” – a
sort of antithesis. You always hurt the one you love.
    • I went from not really enjoying it to loving it from about 30% of the way through. Bonkers,
lovely & with a dog & great story!
    • Thoughtful & wry film – will stick with me.
    • A very different road movie! Very Icelandic. Great dog.
    • Dog should’ve got an Oscar.
    • Deliciously quirky and quietly affecting. Very much a film club film!
    • Very original with some memorable scenes & quite moving.
    • The power of knitting
    • [Very good] – not sure why!
  • ‘Good’: 3 votes
    • Living in that bleak landscape would make anyone a bit crazy. Enjoyed the film as it was so different. Very interesting
    • Easy Rider it aint – but a road movie!

    • Absorbing story. Interesting to see how other judicial systems work – not sure about the Judge allowing everyone to shout over each other.
    • Wonderful film. The 4th time I’ve seen it and it’s better each time!
    • Fantastic cast, fantastic acting, fantastic dog! Just glad I’m not going to be tried in France, though.
    • Superb acting – especially the dog! Brilliant film.
    • A superb film underpinned by superb performances. Fantastic start to the new season.
    • Striking how different are English & French trial processes.
    • A gripping narrative – not just about who did or didn’t do it…
    • Phenomenal acting & brilliant camera work. Wouldn’t want to go on trial in France!
  • ‘Very Good’: 3 votes
    • We saw this in the cinema – well worth a second sitting. Hold the attention for most of the 2 1/2 hours. Good Performances all round.

  • ‘A Fall’ or ‘The Fall’? Superb film which reminds us that cinema, first and foremost, is about acting. Clever plot, perfect pacing, excellent cinematography.

    • I’ve never seen a film with so many heart-wrenching feelings. Her face! I couldn’t stop staring at her all the way through. It was especially emotional for me, having been an unmarried mother 1966 – I kept her though.
    • An excellent film. Very powerful. The main actor’s way of showing emotion with small movements of her face was amazing.
    • Raw. Real. Phenomenal actress. Great soundtrack.
  • ‘Very Good’: 7 votes
    • Hardly a likable character, but I have some sympathy toward her, given her disappointment at the rejection by her mother and her alcoholic father almost stalking her.
    • First half was v. good and the second half disjointed but still v.v. intriguing. Well-acted in an unhinged way!
    • Original, always interesting & always anxious. A very fine central performance.
    • Moving
    • Visually absorbing – a very ‘slow burn’ but a poignant ending!
    • All emotions beautifully portrayed.
    • A Korean Almodovar [it’s actually a French film]. Fascinating exploration of identity with a main character who refuses to be what others want her to be – she dances to her own tune. Sadly she finds others do too!
  • ‘Good’: 4 votes
    • A strange mixed up leading lady whose behaviour left me puzzled. Interesting film.
    • Slow at times with periods of frenzy. What a mixed-up girl!
    • Interesting concept, but I did not warm to the main character.
    • Found Freddie hard to understand and sympathise with. Not sure what was driving her & why she was so difficult so often!
  • ‘Satisfactory’: 2 votes
    • Very good reunion scene between mother and child. Otherwise, a disappointment, given the high quality of the previous three films I have seen this year.
    • Every time I thought I had a handle on it, it changed.
  • ‘Poor’: 1 vote
    • Rather tedious & did not hold my attention.
