    • Very measured, thoughtful drama – unusual for the Western genre. Excellent
    • cinematography.
    • Beautifully filmed, great score. The slow pace made for an enthralling film.
    • Masterclass in acting – great choice of film!
    • Another excellent presentation: makes me doubt I’ve seen a ‘western’ before – the complexity
of the characters, the pace, the images and sound. Yet “why do men fight”. Somewhere in
there there’s the prototype Mage and Donald!
    • Beautifully paced, beautifully shot, beautifully played!
  • ‘Very Good’: 2 votes
    • Certainly, a slow-burner which got there in the end. Fortunately, the bad came to a bad end… possibly a film for the present American predicament.
    • Didn’t immediately follow the timeline!
  • ‘Good’: 2 votes
    • Story line a bit thin.

    • Harrowing, only bearable to watch thanks to the beautiful moments and the values of friendship and courage.
    • A film that had to be made – the ‘boatpeople’ are… people!  Super performances from whole cast.
    • Very good cast; Super music.
Very realistic but a hard watch, some of it.
    • Great soundtrack
    • Great young actors.
    • My heart was racing all through the film.
    • As powerful as I’d heard to expect.
    • Brutally moving. I loved it.
    • Excellent film
  • ‘Very Good’: 5 votes
    • Good acting and a well told story. The age-old belief that opportunity awaits in the big city, only now (with the advent of social media) being played out globally.
    • I found it almost too horrible to watch. Not a film to repeat.  Not sure I could believe it as fiction either.
    • Hard to watch, but a good narrative.  A happy ending?  New take on the buddy movie!
    • A very thought-provoking film with moral & ethical dilemmas.
  • ‘Good’: 2 votes
    • What happened next?
    • The first half or so was wonderful.  The last section on the boat seemed unbelievable and the final scene too positive – or was that all another piece of fantasy.

Audience reaction to “The Commandant’s Shadow”

17 people responded. The breakdown and comments were:

  • ‘Excellent’: 13 votes:
    • Interesting juxtaposition to the previous film, especially observing how the children portrayed in Zone of Interest had grown up in denial to the horrors that had occurred just the other side of the wall.
    • Very interesting documentary.  Incredible film making.
    • Superb example of how documentary can be constructed to impact on its audience and share truths too uncomfortable for fiction.
    • Extraordinarily powerful; the sequence showing the return to Auschwitz was unforgettable.
    • Such an interesting take on the generational trauma.
    • Cannot be analysed in one evening.
    • The Jewish lady living in N.W. London [Anita Lasker-Wallfisch MBE, widow of pianist Peter Wallfisch, mother to cellist Raphael Wallfisch, and author of the book “Inherit the Truth, 1939-1945”] was very impressive! I hope she makes it to her centenary!
    • A superb film: so relevant to the current state of the world.  Such a wonderful person in the Jewish mother
    • Very powerful, compelling watching.
    • A film to leave one speechless.  Especially when there is the existence of Gaza today.  We have learnt nothing.  A privilege to see it.
    • And yet man’s inhumanity to man continues.  Will we never learn.
    • Very powerful
