Marcel and Arletty’s quiet, economically impoverished but emotionally rich life is disrupted when she is diagnosed with a serious disease. At the same time, Marcel encounters a young illegal immigrant whom he takes under his wing and tries to get him a secret passage to England where his family is. The local community pulls out all the stops to try to help Marcel with both problems. Reminiscent of French films of the 30s, this film champions the downtrodden and celebrates the smaller things that make life worth living.
