Original title: Gisaengchung
South Korea – Comedy, Drama, Thriller – Year: 2019 – Running time: 132 mins
Languages: Korean
Synopsis:
First South Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, here is a very black, satirical comedy, which will sink its tendrils into you. An impoverished family gain access to the sumptuous home of a rich businessman and gradually become the ‘parasites’ of the title. Like Shoplifters, earlier in our programme, the themes of poverty, desperation and debtors having to vanish to escape creditors are explored.
The impotent rage he feels … spills into every frame of this incredible film, and leaves us all a little richer as a result.
