Synopsis:

Here is the work which launched Kore-eda’s feature film career, a director who has been keenly appreciated by CFC audiences over the years. Critics compared the film, when first released, with the work of directors such as Peter Greenaway and David Lynch. It is certainly sombre, ravishing, almost motionless in style, while the psychological motivation of the main character owes much to the apparently inexplicable suicide of her husband.

Maborosi is one of those valuable films where you have to actively place yourself in the character’s mind. There are times when we do not know what she is thinking, but we are inspired with an active sympathy.
